Jean read the flyer. “Great—another dozen Berthas and Bartlebys running around with nightsticks!”

“I wonder what words he’ll put on that spelling test,” Katrin mused. “Law? Order?”

“Threats? Beatings?”

“Let’s hope it doesn’t go that far.”

“If he’s starting up a serious spy force,” Jean said, “then that’s all the more reason to spread the word about the thistleberry danger on our own. You know, quietly.”

“Quietly, like how you snuck off to Bigsby this morning without telling anyone?” Katrin grinned. “A whisper campaign? Fine by me. Any ideas on how to start?”

Jean thought for a moment. “Dr. Fields’s office is right next to my dad’s—I mean, Micah’s. I can stop by tomorrow and see if I can find any more copies of her flyer, or any other evidence from her research that would help us. Then maybe we can hand the flyers out and explain things to the kids ourselves. You can do that when they come in for haircuts, right?”

“Sure,” Katrin said. “And you can do it when you serve meals.”

“We’re on,” Jean said, and she reached across a pile of money to squeeze her best friend’s hand.

It felt good to have a plan.
